Mineral
Point is the 2nd oldest town in Wisconsin history. The town was
originally settled by artisans and Cornish miners in nearby Pendarvis, now
a restoration of log-and-stone cottages on Shake Rag Street and a state
historic site that interprets Cornish life. The street got its name
from the wives waving dishcloths out their doorways to call the men home
for dinner from their diggings on the opposite hillside.
Pendarvis, named after an
estate in Cornwall, is a historic site of 6 homes, a pub, a museum shop
and a bookstore, offering a selection of locally made and imported English
handcrafts, teas and preserves. Period-costumed guides provide tours
and recall the area's heyday as the center of Wisconsin's lead-mining
boom.
Today, Mineral Point is noted
for its thriving artist community featuring potters, painters, carvers,
weavers, metal and wood workers, and needlepoint artisans. The town
is also an antique collector's haven with antique stores lining the
streets. |
