What: A large Civil War re-enactment in the Midwest, typically
drawing more than 13,000 visitors and 1,200 Confederate, Union and
civilian re-enactors from 15 states. Throughout the 280-acre grounds,
visitors can see, hear and smell Civil War times. Each morning there
are artillery, cavalry and infantry drill demonstrations. Other
highlights include the field hospital, where re-enactor doctors and nurses
perform period medical treatments, and the suttler area where people
dressed in costume sell supplies to the "soldiers" and books,
meat pies, and sarsaparilla to the public. During the war, suttlers
followed the troops to sell them personal effects, alcohol, writing paper
and prayer books.
