McDonald Observatory

photos by UnCommonDays.com

These stark white and silver observatories, dotting the desolate mountains and the mammoth telescopes they house are most impressive.  Whether you view the observatories from afar, up-close, or in a self- or expert-guided tour, they are uncommon sights!  Take advantage of an expert-guided tour of the 107-inch telescope and the newer Hobby-Eberly telescope to learn lots about these instruments. And, if you have a chance to peer into the heavens through the 107-inch scope (by reservation only), you'll be treated to something that's truly out of this world. These viewings are on one night only each month - usually on the Wednesday nearest the full moon - and are completely sold out as much as 9 months in advance.  If you're in the area on Tuesday, Friday or Saturday night, however, don't miss an opportunity to attend Star Party!
