The Nashville Parthenon

photos by UnCommonDays.com

This impressive building is the only full scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece. Nashville's Centennial Exposition of 1897 was the occasion to build the first replica, a temporary building which was replaced by a permanent structure finished in 1931. Nashville's long-standing reputation as the "Athens of the South", partially because of its many colleges and universities, is one reason for its attachment to this symbolic link to ancient Athens. An interesting architectural point to observe is the image of a Grecian urn made by the space between the columns.
