The
world's largest mountain sculpture in progress, Crazy Horse Memorial
depicts the Lakota leader astride a horse. When completed, the
mountain carving will stand 563 feet high and 641 feet long and will be
carved in the round. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski began the project in
1948 at the request of Lakota elders who wanted “the white man to know
the red man has great heroes, too”.
All FOUR faces on Mount Rushmore would fit inside just Crazy
Horse’s head. The face of Crazy Horse was completed
on June 3, 1998, marking 40 years of progress on the sculpture.
Make your way directly to the film to learn about the enormous undertaking
this sculptor began and his family has continued. The Native
American Educational and Cultural Center, with its exhibits, Native arts
and crafts, gift shop and book store, adds to the beauty and dignity of
the Memorial. |
