Corn Palace

photos by UnCommonDays.com

The object of building the original “corn palace” in 1892 was to put Mitchell on the map.  It was a “corny” and completely commercial idea, as it still is, but it worked!  Several buildings later, the current “palace” is viewed by thousands of curious tourists and is used for various community activities each year, including some 150 basketball games.  Using native corn, grasses and grains, the building is redecorated each year, to portray a new theme.  This huge “corn-by-number” display can probably rightly claim to be a “one and only”.
