Black Hills National Forest

These ancient mountains encompass rugged rock formations, grassy meadows, clear mountain streams, thick strands of ponderosa pine and Black Hills spruce. It was the Lakota who first called the mountains “paha sapa” meaning “hills that are black” which is what the blanket of pine trees make them look like from a distance.
