America's Oldest Tavern

White Horse Tavern, 1673

Originally constructed as the residence of Frances Brinley, this building was purchased in 1673 by William Mayes, Sr. who obtained a tavern license in 1687.  Ownership of this building can be traced through the Mayes family for over 200 years, including one family member who was a notorious pirate!  In the early 1900's, after owners had used it in a variety of ways, it began a steady decline into disrepair.  In 1957, through local philanthropic efforts, it was meticulously restored and is now privately owned and once again operated as a place to meet, eat and quench thirst.

You will appreciate a visit to this uncommon tavern if you are prepared to pay for the history of this place and have time to sit and enjoy it all for a while.  Reservations are recommended.
