The Basin

The Basin

photos by UnCommonDays.com

An intriguing spot where the Pemigiwasett river flows out of Profile Lake (which reflects the Old Man of the Mountain) and gathers water from many streams along its way to the Merrimack River and the Atlantic Ocean. Paths wander through the woods, beside and across the stream, until it rushes into, around and through this pothole some 30 ft wide and 15 ft deep. A place of great beauty that showcases the many attributes of water.

A few miles south of Franconia Notch on I-93 (which is also Franconia Notch Parkway, at this point). Accessible for either north or south bound traffic.

Free parking.  No admission fee.
Very crowded during foliage season and not always plowed during heavy snow.
