Louisiana Capitol Buildings

photos by UnCommonDays.com

The "old" and "new" Capitol buildings in downtown Baton Rouge, both claim a unique appearance and history. The "old" one, built in 1849 stands out because of its gothic design. Its white towers dominate the hillside overlooking the Mississippi river. The "new" one not only stands out but stands UP, being the tallest state capitol in the U.S. Built in 1932, through the efforts of then Governor Huey P. Long and with much controversy, it became the place of his assassination in 1935. Visitors can tour both buildings and see much of Baton Rouge from the observation deck on the 27th floor of the current Capitol.
