Nachoochee Indian Mound

This mound stands as a reminder that this “enchanted land” was inhabited by the Cherokee Nation before 1450 and visited by DeSoto in 1540, in his search for gold.  Measuring 190’ long, 150’ wide and 20’ high, the mound held the Town House of the ancient Cherokee town of Gauxule where a sacred fire burned and around which ceremonial dances were performed.  The discovery of gold in 1828 began the events that resulted in the Cherokees being pushed to Oklahoma on the “trail where they cried”.

At the intersection of GA 17 and 75.
