Cooch's House & Bridge |
The Cooch House, built in 1746, was owned by Col. Thomas Cooch when the British Gen. Cornwallis made it his headquarters. Col. Cooch had gathered his family and fled to Lancaster, PA prior to the battle that took place on the grounds of his home. Today, the house is the private residence of a direct descendant of Col. Cooch. |

Cooch's Bridge is the site of the only military confrontation in Delaware during the Revolutionary War. On September 3, 1777 a small band of troops handpicked by George Washington fought the combined army of British troops and Hessian mercenaries, thus slowing the British advance toward the Brandywine River and Philadelphia. Proud tradition has it that the Stars and Stripes (13-star flag) was first flown at this engagement. |
