Wandering the Streets
East Haddam, CT

photos by UnCommonDays.com

East Haddam, first purchased from Indians for thirty coats in 1662, encompasses 56.6 square miles of countryside, farms, lakes, parks and neighborhoods and was, at one time, the largest town in the lower Connecticut Valley.  Walking the streets and driving the roads provides the visitor with views of houses with cupola's, a school house where Nathan Hale taught, a swing bridge built in 1913 which is still working today (most of the time), a castle built by William Gillette, the actor who originally portrayed Sherlock Holmes, and two wonderfully complimentary structures, the Goodspeed Opera House and Gelston House Restaurant and Inn.  During the milder months, you might even enjoy a ride across the Connecticut River on a small ferry boat (especially if the bridge isn't working).
