Okrafest

2nd weekend in September

Where:  Checotah, OK

What:  This humble but hardy vegetable was a mainstay for the area’s Native Americans and early homesteaders because it could withstand drought.  Today it’s honored with a citywide festival, where it’s cooked and served in every way imaginable.  Food tasting and samples of fried okra, a favorite Southern dish.
